How to Interview When the Interviewer Is an Algorithm

What AI Interview Platforms Actually Evaluate

The first generation of AI interview tools -- HireVue chief among them -- attracted controversy for analyzing facial expressions. That era is over. AI interview platforms are typically configured per role. The hiring company defines competencies -- leadership, analytical thinking, customer orientation, technical depth -- and the algorithm listens for evidence of those competencies. The same answer can score differently depending on the role it is being evaluated against.

How This Differs from a Human Interview

Rapport Does Not Factor In

In a human interview, likability and rapport are significant variables. The candidate who finds common ground or reads the room has an advantage unrelated to qualifications.

Strong opening:

"I took over a product launch that was six weeks behind schedule and delivered it on time by restructuring the sprint cadence and reducing scope to core features."

The strong opening contains the result, the method, and a metric in the first sentence.

3. Use Exact Role Keywords

Because AI platforms map responses against predefined competencies, using the exact language from the job description increases scoring precision. If the posting emphasizes "cross-functional collaboration," use that phrase. If it mentions "data-driven decision making," describe a decision you made using data and use those specific words.

This is not gaming the system. It is communicating in the vocabulary the role was defined in.

4. Control the Environment

The environmental checklist for an AI interview is more demanding than for a Zoom call with a person:

  • Lighting: Face the light source. Backlit faces are harder for cameras to capture clearly.
  • Background: Plain and uncluttered.
  • Audio: Use a headset or external microphone. Laptop microphones pick up keyboard noise, room echo, and HVAC.
  • Internet: Wired connection if possible.
  • Interruptions: Close all other applications. Disable notifications.

5. Record and Review Practice Runs

The most effective preparation technique is recording practice answers and watching them back -- not for body language, but for verbal tics, filler words, and structural clarity. Pymetrics (now part of Harver) takes a different approach: neuroscience-based games that measure cognitive and emotional traits like attention, memory, risk tolerance, and pattern recognition. There is no "right answer" -- the system maps a candidate's trait profile against successful employees in the same role. Trying to guess the "correct" behavior typically backfires.

Paradox (Olivia) operates as a conversational AI recruiter, handling scheduling, screening questions, and initial qualification via chat. Concise, direct answers outperform lengthy responses.

What the Data Suggests About Fairness

AI interviewing raises legitimate fairness concerns. Research shows that structured AI interviews -- those with standardized questions and consistent scoring rubrics -- reduce certain forms of bias compared to unstructured human interviews, where factors like interviewer mood and personal rapport significantly influence outcomes (NBS, 2024 Structured Interview Meta-Analysis).

However, AI systems can encode different biases: against non-native speakers, against candidates whose communication style diverges from the training data's baseline, against those with less access to preparation resources.

For candidates, the practical takeaway is that AI interview performance is a trainable skill. The algorithm's criteria are more transparent than a human interviewer's unconscious preferences.
